Another cache of natural gas has been found in all seven zones of Sundalpur Gas Field in Companyganj of Noakhali district and the find is expected come to 500 to 700 billion cubic feet.
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will announce the discovery of the new gas reserves within a week or two,” said Prof Dr Hossain Mansur, Chairman of Petrobangla.
Dr Mansur also told banglanews that now well-drilling work in the new gas field is underway at Sundalpur.
“We are very happy with the amount of gas being discovered,” said the chairman of the petroleum corporation.
A senior of official of Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX), wishing anonymity, said primarily it is expected that 500 to 700 billion cube feet of gas would be found.
“We will need this month for declaration about the amount of the gas by logging,” said the official.
Dr Mansur told a seminar Tuesday that the energy shortage of the county is going to end within next few years. “The newly explored gas will contribute to reducing the energy crisis facing the country,” he said.
He also informed his audience that the premier would announce soon the new gas find.
The seminar was jointly organized by Titas Gas Distribution Company Limited and German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) at a city hotel.
Prof Mansur said, “Petrobangla and BAPEX are searching for new gas reserves with ultramodern tools and four rigs--and this is the outcome of this effort.”
Dr Mansur also observed that the natural gas resource is not unlimited. “So, we should to be economical in using gas from now on,” he said.
Mentioning previous “false” statement about gas reserves in the country he alleged that there had been given “false declaration” on getting gas in the past.
Energy Adviser to the premier Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi, state minister for energy Enamul Haque and managing director of Titas Abdul Aziz Khan, among others, also spoke at the seminar.
