In a statement on Friday, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the government has taken the initiative to destroy the
Grameen Bank.
The cabinet on Thursday approved a proposal for amending the Grameen Bank Ordinance 1983 and President Zillur Rahman is expected to promulgate an ordinance soon to this effect as the parliament is now in recess.
Sharply reacting to the government’s plan, Fakhrul alleged that the government is hatching such a heinous plot against the Grameen Bank “out of personal animosity” towards Nobel Peace Prize laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus.
Mentioning that the Awami League-led government never cares about the interest of the country and its people, he said the government is trying to take its revenge by harming the Grameen Bank, an organisation which protects the interests of millions of the poor.
The BNP spokesperson called upon the government to shelve its plan to amend the decades-old Grameen Bank ordinance in order to save the poor people’s institution.
Otherwise, he warned, the people irrespective of their party affiliation, opinion, class and profession will build a strong resistance against the destructive decision of “this terrorist government.”
