Pharmaceutical sector in Bangladesh is one of the most developed technology oriented sectors which is contributing to the country's economy. In Bangladesh, pharmaceutical industry has been identified as a priority sector. Presently, the industry is the second largest taxpayer to the country's exchequer. Though currently there is no evidenceof bird flu in Bangladesh, it can easilybecome affected by bird flu virusthrough migratory birds and once thevirus starts spreading insidethis densely populated country The Bangalore-based Wipro BioMed, the healthcare division of Wipro Limited, said it had entered into an agreement with Ciphergen Biosystems Inc to market the latter's ProteinChip Systems and Solutions. Bangladesh's pharmaceuticals industry received export orders worth Tk 8.50 cr from Burma (Mayanmar) at Pharmaceuticals fair in Rangoon, Burma, according to a recent report. Karnataka bulk drug majors like Biocon, RL Fine Chem, Lake Chemicals, Micro Labs and Bal Pharma are some of the major suppliers to Bangladesh with their range of products. Biocon is on an aggressive drive in Bangladesh primarily because of its increasing dependence on the lifestyle disorder drugs like cardiovasculars and anti-diabetics. RL Fine Chem, the bulk drug and intermediary actives firm intends to consolidate its presence in Bangladesh region, going by the present demand for products. Lake Chemicals Private Limited, a bulk drug company in Karnataka which has a significant presence in Bangladesh intends to consolidate its presence in the region with a range of new products. The Bangladeshi firm, Beximco Pharma, is in the process of drawing up plans to enter the US and European markets by 2008. Beximco has already floated on the UK Alternative Investment Market in October 2005. Dignitaries from the US and Maldives paid separate visits to Beximco's world class manufacturing plants at Tongi in Gazipur. Prime Minister of Bangladesh Begum Khaleda Zia urged local and foreign entre-preneurs in a recent meeting to set up international standard pharmaceutical industries in the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) Square Pharmaceuticals, one among the leading drug makers in Bangladesh, has invested about Tk one billion in 2005 to develop new manufacturing facilities and expanded its export base to new countries targeting 100 percent growth in 2006.
